Brushing your child’s teeth is a lot more important than you think when it comes to the right amount of toothpaste. Not enough might not provide sufficient protection, and too much can increase the risk of ingesting excessive fluoride.
A common question we receive at Pasqua South Dental is “How much toothpaste should my child use?”
It all depends on their age.
0 to 3 Years: Use a Smear or Grain-of-Rice Amount
A tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) is all your baby or toddler needs.
Children at this age are still developing brushing skills and are quite likely to swallow toothpaste.
They can use a very small amount and still maintain an appropriate amount of fluoride intake without harming their teeth.
3 to 6 Years: Use a Pea-Sized Amount
After age 3-6, you can use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
This is enough to clean and protect their teeth effectively without overdoing it. Parents should still supervise brushing during these years to ensure children brush properly and do not swallow too much toothpaste.
Over 6 Years: Pea-Sized or Slightly More
If the child is over 6 years old, then a pea-sized dose is a good guide. If they can effectively spit out the toothpaste after brushing, then a bit more might be suitable in some instances.
Most children will be able to brush well by this age, but reminders and supervision are useful.
Full Strip of Toothpaste? Never
In commercials, a full strip of toothpaste might appear normal on the entire toothbrush, but this is not suggested for kids.
Too much toothpaste can lead to excessive fluoride intake, particularly in young children. Most children do not need a full strip.
Why the Right Amount Matters
Using the proper amount of toothpaste helps:
- Protect your child’s teeth from cavities
- Support healthy oral development
- Reduce the risk of swallowing too much fluoride
- Encourage good brushing habits from an early age
A Few Brushing Tips for Parents
To help your child get the most out of brushing:
- Brush twice a day
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Help or supervise brushing until they can do it well on their own
- Encourage them to spit out toothpaste after brushing
- Brush regularly as part of a regular routine
